Just as you can entrain the energy of a crystal or stone, a crystal or stone can entrain the energies surrounding it.
So every time someone handles a stone or crystal, or changes its location, or even if it’s simply in an emotional environment in your home, the vibratory energies of the crystal can change slightly. To counteract this effect, it’s important to clean your stones or crystals regularly.
Any method will work, although we recommend bran or sage for their convenience.
Let’s take a look at 5 effective stone-cleaning methods.
1 Leave your stones and crystals in the moonlight
Moonlight cleans crystals and stones.
Simply place them on a windowsill or outside overnight. This method is easy, practical, requires no equipment and can be carried out anywhere, even on the move.
2 Clean your stones in a quartz geode
If you have a large quartz geode, place the smaller crystals or stones inside the geode for 12 to 24 hours.
You can buy a large quartz geode here:
3 Use sound
A crystal or brass singing bowl can cleanse your stones and crystals. If you have one, make the bowl sing by ringing it, then hold the crystals in the sound field.
Here are some crystal and brass singing bowls:
4 Use sage smoke
To do this, light a sage bundle or stick and let the smoke drift over the crystals or stones. It’s a great way to clean a bunch of crystals and stones at once, and one of the cleaning methods preferred by many for its practicality.
5 Cleaning stones with salt or water
You’ll often see people recommend cleaning crystals in sea salt, water or salt water.
The downside is that salt, water or salt water will damage some crystals. This is why you should never clean raw or natural crystals in salt, water or saltwater. Examples of crystals that should never be cleaned in this way are :
- Amber
- Calcite
- Cyanite
- Malachite
- Opal
- Moonstone
- Selenite
- Topaz
On the other hand, you can clean labradorite with a handful of Himalayan salt.

When your stones need cleaning, you’ll feel it.
Now you know all the best ways to clean your stones, crystals or minerals effectively, without damaging them.
Caring for and preserving your stones and crystals
Keeping your stones and crystals in good physical condition also helps protect their highest possible vibratory state.
To care for your crystals and stones, follow these 3 tips:
- Clean your crystals at least once a month: we recommend you do this at every full moon, if possible, which may help you remember. You should also clean them after intensive use and when you bring them home for the first time.
- Store them carefully: storing them individually wrapped can prevent them from being scratched and maintain their vibratory energy.
- If you’re storing/displaying your crystals or stones, dust them with a soft cloth: a soft microfiber or cotton cloth works well, or you can use a feather duster. Avoid abrasive cloths.
How do I store my stones and crystals?
If you wish to display your crystals and stones, place them on sturdy shelves, in complete safety.
Small crystals can be placed in bowls. The most delicate crystals need to be stored with care. You can opt for a plastic container with several compartments, like the one used to store pearls. This is an excellent way of storing smaller crystals.
Here’s the ideal type of compartment:
If you store them together in a container without compartments, wrap each crystal in a small cloth or tissue paper and store them away from moisture.
Some crystals also lose their color when exposed to direct sunlight, so you can store them away from direct sunlight simply by moving them away from a sunny window. Examples of such sensitive crystals are :
- Amethyst
- Aquamarine
- Aventurine
- Citrine
- Fluorite
- Quartz (any color)
- Sapphire
